About the Department of UO

The Department of Theater Arts offers major curricula leading to the bachelor of arts (B.A.), bachelor of science (B.S.), master of arts (M.A.), master of science (M.S.), master of fine arts (M.F.A.), and doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. Courses in theater arts are available for students majoring in other disciplines who want to develop their communication skills and their ability to appreciate and evaluate what they see and hear.
The theater arts department offers a cross-disciplinary and liberal-arts education. Preprofessional courses provide vocational competence in teaching and in some aspects of commercial theater. Some students seek careers in commercial, educational, and community theaters as designers, actors, technicians, stage managers, or theater managers. Many continue specialized training in M.F.A. degree programs or nondegree professional training schools. Some students use their liberal-arts background to pursue vocational opportunities that require advanced skills in communication and organization.
Students may gain practical experience in theater studies through University Theatre productions and other opportunities.
Theaters. The Robinson Theatre has a proscenium stage and seats nearly 400 people. The new Miller Theatre project will include a "black box" arena theater seating 150200 people, a new lobby serving both the Robinson and tbe new Arena Theatre, a new costume shop, and an expanded scene shop. Construction is expected to be complete by October 2008. The Pocket Playhouse, in Villard Hall, is a small proscenium stage and seats seventy-five people.
Technical Facilities. The scene shop is well equipped with power tools for wood and metal fabrication. Lighting equipment includes computerized controls and up-to-date instruments. The costume shop has power sewing and serging machines and a laundry and crafts area. Students are encouraged to sign up for production workshop classes or to practice their crafts as volunteers. Those who qualify for work-study financial aid are hired to assist in the shops. The shops are open every day.
Pocket Playhouse. Pocket Playhouse is the site for a series of productions presented by an elected student board. Student directors may propose plays and the board makes selections by lottery.
University Theatre. The department's season is composed of productions in two venues: the Robinson Theatre and the new Arena Theatre. Faculty members and graduate students direct and design as many as six shows a year.

Friday Night Lights Call for Extras
After we announced that NBC's new fall series Friday Night Lights would be shooting in Austin, a few of you wrote in asking us about whether they were still casting for the show. We got in on this rather late, as they're indeed looking for extras today.
Two separate casting calls will be held at the 24-Hour Fitness in Round Rock (info), one at 1pm this afternoon and the second at 8:30pm this evening.

The series, based on Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist H.G. 'Buzz' Bissinger's book of the same name and cousin Peter Berg's film adaptation, has a shooting budget of roughly $1.5 million per episode. Word from one Austinist staffer is that, owing to the number of high school teams already using all available sites this summer, they're building their own football field complete with artificial turf.

This show with out a doubt has numerous types of stunts and dance techniques. All throughout the production are a vary of routines that will take one's breath away. I guess it is safe to that that this is quite a form of art.

During our performances, singers, actors, dancers, and musicians celebrate heritage, culture, and enlightenment by sharing stories of hope and triumph and then discussing it with the audience. The purpose is to start much needed conversations about issues that are important to us, from there we can begin the process of healing."

Theatrapy is a great way to show that it is unconventional in various types of work. What we come to find within this experience is truly inside ourselves. Seeing these situations experienced can make a charge into the direction of realising all your inabitions.

Throughout the work we start to see from the very start of what is good, things maybe different from what we are use to seeing. Unconventional, yes ..not everthing can be as it seems. Allthough throughout from the creativness it seemed to hav all around represents something special in its own relm.

Raided and closed by police.

6. Arrested
A theater teacher from Longwood, Florida was arrested on the accusation of alleged sex acts involving young girls' feet.

7. NEA 4
"In a lawsuit filed in September 1990 that challenged the agency's decision and the constitutionality of the language of its policy to fund art that met "general standards of decency and respect for the diverse beliefs and values of the American public." In June 1992, US District Court Judge A. Wallace Tashima ruled that the language of the NEA policy was indeed unconstitutional. While the Justice Department appealed Tashima's ruling, the NEA agreed to pay $252,000 to the four artists in an out-of-court settlement in June 1993."

8. Regional Theatre
"On June 4, 2003, at a meeting filled with more than 200 concerned artists and community members, the Board of Trustees of Oakland University, which houses the 600-seat Meadow Brook Theatre, a major LORT theatre in Detroit, voted to approve a proposal submitted by the Meadow Brook Theatre Ensemble, a new non-profit corporation that will run the theatre for future productions. On May 5, the Committee staged a rally on the Oakland University campus and a coalition of actors, students and theatre patrons led a protest drawing attention to the situation and increasing public awareness. "

9. College/University
A Florida theatre Director accidentally shot an actor during a rehearsal of John Steinbeck's "Of Mice And Men". The bullet shaved the actors head and he was released quickly from the hospital.

A group of parents and teachersare upset with Jill Robertson's decision to produce Country Gothic. Due to the fact that a man is lured into town thinking he is going to marry a girl when he is truly going to be sacrificed in an annual town ritual, Country Gothic was posponed because it did not uphold the Christian values of the town.
